Friends of Snowshoe Thompson
October 6, 2003 6 pm
Wild Rose Inn
Minutes
Present: Lynne & Bill Bowersock, Darlene & Ted Tiffany, Kerstin &
Charles Wolle, Loraine Dix,
Nina MacLeod, Marilyn Presti, Carole Hart, Sue Knight
Update: Bill reported that the Greater Genoa Business Association had
voted to transfer the funds raised by the Snowshoe Thompson Committee for the
statue in Mormon Station Park to the new organization “Friends of Snowshoe Thompson”.
Sue reported that a Non-profit Corporate Charter had been granted by the Secretary
of State for the “Friends of Snowshoe Thompson”. Tax ID number and 501(c)3 status
will be obtained as soon as possible.
Purpose: “To promote and foster the memory of John “Snowshoe” Thompson through events and activities” and to maintain the statue and planter in Mormon Station State Park".
Mission statement: Several ideas and words were discussed and Charles Wolle suggested the following: “To honor the memory of Snowshoe Thompson in many ways, including promotion of international cooperation between Norwegian and American communities; promotion of connections between American Lutheran Churches and Scandinavian Lutheran Churches; encouraging education in the schools about Norwegians in America; and holding events supporting these ideals.” This statement will be fine-tuned and adopted at the next meeting of officers.
Existing obligations/events: Nina spoke about the annual Snowshoe Thompson Cross Country/snowshoe Tour, planned in Hope Valley for March 13, 2004. Nina and Sue will handle publicity for this event and encourage locals to participate. Frank Tortorich will give a presentation on “Snowshoe’s” historic mail route. The Longboard Association from Plumas county will give a demonstration of skiing on longboards. A portion of the proceeds from this event benefits the “Friends of Snowshoe Thompson”.
Commemorative glasses, cachet envelopes and note cards (from the statue dedication in June 2001) are still being sold. Sue has these and some of the Genoa businesses are selling the note cards.
Maintenance of the statue and planter continues. This involves additional soil and plants on a yearly basis, sealing the bricks, resanding bricks as necessary. Bill will seal the bricks before winter. Carole Hart has overseen additional planting, trimming and soil replacement this year and will continue to do so.
Brainstorming: Nina stated that she would like to revive the poster contest between schoolchildren in Carson Valley and Norway. She will communicate with the CV Historical Society.
Since the CV Historical Society will not be hosting Snowshoe Thompson Days in the future, it was suggested that the Friends of Snowshoe Thompson organize a one-day event in June to commemorate Snowshoe Thompson. This might include a resentation about Snowshoe Thompson, an address by the Norwegian Consulate from San Francisco, Norwegian Folk dancers, and a barbecue in the park. Nina will see if and when the Norwegian dancers might be available in 2004.
Bill mentioned that the Rev. Ross Hidy (who spoke at the dedication of the statue) represents the Center of Lutheran History of the West and is writing a book. Sue will inform him about the new organization and events.
Marilyn will contact the Town of Genoa and the GGBA to see if they will include on their web sites an information page on Snowshoe Thompson and contact for the Friends of Snowshoe Thompson.
Officers: For the 2003-2004 year the officers are as follows:
President Bill Bowersock
Secretary Sue Knight
Treasurer Loraine Dix
Director Ted Tiffany - liaison with the CV Historical Society
Director Nina MacLeod - liaison between Genoa and Norway
Director Kerstin Wolle
It was decided that membership dues will be waived at this time. Anyone is welcome to be on the membership list and will be notified of meetings and events.
Bank account: Sue will complete the paperwork for the organization and open a bank account at Heritage Bank in Carson City.
Next meeting: January 26, 2004, 6 pm at the Wild Rose Inn, unless a meeting is requested before that date.
Meeting adjourned 8 pm
Respectfully submitted,
Sue Knight, Secretary
