Jon Torsteinsen Rue was born in Tinn, Telemark and became an American legend in the Sierra Mountains of Nevada and California. They called him "Snowshoe Thompson".

Jon Torsteinsen Rue grew up in this valley near present-day Rjukan, Tinn, Telemark. There is a monument dedicated to Snowshoe there.
