July 10-12, 2003, Winona, Minnesota
Thursday-Saturday, July 10-12, 2003. Those were the dates for the Seven-Lag Stevne held at Winona State University. Winona is an old city full of history. It has one of the largest collections of Victorian commercial architecture in the area with more than 100 sites on the national Historical Register. Some call the city the "Stained Glass" capital of the nation. Five companies still produce stained glass windows. Its history as a river port and lumber center brought wealth and splendor to the city. From Garvin Heights Park 575 feet above the Mississippi River, one can see 50 miles of the river. The scenic drive to Winona along the Mississippi (both upstream and downstream) is a delight.
Genealogy for the stevne was in a new regional library on campus where we held classes, demonstrations, and use a computer classroom. The library has most of the Minnesota newspapers on microfilm. Genealogy sessions began at 8:00 a.m. Thursday, July 10.
There was housing in the college dorms. Pillows, mattress pads, sheets, towels, wash cloth and soap were provided.
