Telelaget Historian Gene Estensen reports that Halvor Haugan and his son Haavard arrived in Atlanta on October 1, 2005 to begin a tour of Civil War battlefields. There was an emphasis on battlefields where immigrants from Norway fought and died for their new country. The 15th Wisconsin Regiment, the "Norwegian Regiment", suffered greatly in Georgia in the battles of Chickamauga, Picketts's Mill and at the prison at Andersonville.
Gene guided them for 10 days with stops at a dozen or more Civil War battlefields from Georgia, on up through Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland (Antietam), and Pennsylvania (Gettysburg). There were stops at two major parks along the way, Great Smokey National Park and Shennandoah National Park.
