He came to America from Tinn, Telemark in the year 1841 at the age of 20 and was a single man.
Gene Estensen - Webmaster - Submitted after researching "Utvandrarregister for Tinn 1837-1907.
Webmaster's note - The following two updates came from Lonna Arneson and illustrate the difficulties we have with the historical record:
This is a note to let you know that Thore Thoresen Spaaneim (this
was
spelled a variety of ways) but known here mostly as Spaanem and those
who spell it Sponem are related too. He was my great great grandfather and I
descend from his daughter, Gunhild (Julia), who was born in Dane County, Wisconsin.
They established a farm in 1846 and it is still in the family. Sincerely, Lonna
Arneson (my great grandfather Christ Arneson married Julia)
Something is not correct. I had e-mailed in Aug. re Thore Thorsen
Brukaas (Spanheim-Spaanem etc). He was not a single man of 20 or so
when he came here. He was married to Turi Svendsdtr Brukaas and they
had three children when they came in 1841 - Birgit Thoresdtr Brukaas,
Margit Thoresdtr Brukaas and Svend Thoresen Brukaas. Could you kindly
let me know if you need more info so this can be straightened out. In a
list of those who came I saw a Thore Thoresen Spaanem coming 7/4/1893.
I'd have to check, but our Thore died in his 70s and as far as I know
never returned to NW to come back here again. You've done a wonderful
job to have recorded all this info, for those who are interested or will
be at some point, for years to come. Sincerely, Lonna Arneson
