Asbjørn Kjetilsson Berdalen, b 23.4. 1854, to USA 25.5.1885, married 1879 to Eldrid Hadlesdtr. Hoslemo, b 14.10.1847:

children:

Anne, b 21.1.1880
Kjetil, f 3.9.1883, tvill.
Inga, f 3.9.1883, tvill.

Possible last names in the US: Berdal, Berdahl,Berdale, Beardale, Kittilson, Kittelsen, Kiddelsen etc.

----------

Next comes some of the descendants of Olav Tostenson Ørnefjell. Olav died 1868, but some of his children emigrated with their families:

1. Torstein Olson, b oct.6. 1816, emigrated ca 1873 with wife Tone Olsdtr. and children Gunnar, b 1847, Tone, b 1849, Talette, b 1854, Lars, b 1859 andThomas, b 1863.

Possible last names: Ol(e)son or Lys(e)dal.

2. Olav (Ole) Olsen b sept.24 1818, emigrated ca 1873 with wife Anne Olsdtr. and children.

Possible surnames: Ol(e)son or Lys(e)dal

3. Ingebjørg Olsdtr., b 1822, never emigrated. But she had a son born out of wedlock, his name was Halvor Ditlefsen,b 1842, and he emigrated 1869 with wife Anne Malene Olsdtr., born Hetland, and two daughters named Inger Marie and Mette.

Possible surnames:Ditlefson, Hetland

4. Torbjørn Olsson, b sept. 15.1832, emigrated ca 1866-68 with wife Vilborg Gunnarsdtr. Røysland and son Olav,b 1866. Probable surname: Lys(e)dal or maybe Olson

5. Gro Olsdtr. married to Enoch Pedersen, emigrated 1871. Probable surname: Pedersen, Peterson etc.

Next in Line are the siblings of Svein Hovden,

Sigvald , b Dec. 1.1832, emigrated 1866 with wife Margit Talleivsdtr. Håtveit of Mo, b Dec. 14. 1832

I have Sigvald's children, but would like to know where he lived, and when he died.

Next is Vetle, b aug.13.1844, emigrated 1866,married in the US to Anne (sister of Margit) Talleivsdtr. Håtveit, b apr. 21.1845,

Anne died in Marshall, Lyons County, MN, 1882. Vetle married again in 1883, New wife was Liv Kvambekk of Åmotsdal, Seljord. They later moved to Lamont, Alb., Can, not far from Edmonton, an presumably died there. I'd like to have their dates of death and some info of their children.

Finally (of this family) we come to Anne Anne Knutsdtr. Hovden , b apr.10. 1838, emigrated as a widow in 1887, at least I think so. I venture the guess she initially went to live with one of her siblings in Amerika, but would like to know if she remarried, how long she lived and where.

The next person in line, I doubt if you can find, but I'll try him anyway:

Ole Ol(e)son Breive, b apr. 12.1895, emigrated 1923.

His parents were Torbjørg Salmundsdtr. Breive and her husband, the lapp Ole Johan Andersen Stannfjell. On the Ellis Island record it is said that Ole intended to live in Brooklyn, and work as a chauffeur. If any of this came true, I don't know. Possible surname: Brevig or Olson

------

Next are three of the children of Eivind Halvorsen Bø, who lived in Berdalen.

They were names were

Knut, b dec. 3.1902

John, b oct.10.1907

and

Torbjørg, b Dec. 1.1909.

All of these left for Canada, Knut in 1928, John and Torbjørg in 1929. In the emigration protocol they used the

surname Trydal (where they had lived before 1918, when their father moved to Berdalen.) In Canada they may have been called Trydal, Tridale, Boe, Berdahl or Evenson.

Next comes another Knut Olsen. His surname was Tveiten, from tveiten in Valle, and he was born 1840.

He married Angjerd Ditlefsdtr. Bjørnarå in 1860, and they had 10 children. In 1888 they lost their properties in Tveiten and Bjørnarå, and probably emigrated the same year. They brought with them sons Olav, b 1865 and Ditlef, b 1875. Olav and his mother returned to Norway before 1903, when shed died, but Knut and Ditlef presumably stayed in the US as long as they lived. Where they settled I've no idea. Possible surnames: Twit, Tweten and so on, also Olsen, Olsson and so on. Ditlef is so rare a name that it might be possible to locate him, I hope.

--------

Next comes Kjetil Tarjeisson Bjørnarå, b aug. 30.1851, emigrated 1882 with wife Gyro Halvorsdtr., b Homme 1854 andchildren:

til USA

Halvor, b Nov. 13. 1871

Anne, f 1877

It is doubtful if they would have called themselves Bear River, which would sound all too Indian, so Torgerson or sth of that ilk would be a better bet, I suppose.

Then comes Kjetil's brother Arne Tarjeisson Bjørnarå , b feb. 9. 1855 who probably also emigrated 1882.

His wife was Tone Tarjeisdtr. Røysland, b 1855,

children:

Tarjei, b oct. 19. 1877

Anne, b jun. 10.1880

Kjetil and Arne's mother, Tone, b ca 1830, also emgrated. She was a widow and left Norway in 1895, presumably to live with her sons.

Firstly the children of Jon Brotteli.

1. Olav Jonsson, b may 22.1881, emigrated 1900, Married (in the US) to Hæge Sveinsdtr. Berg, b 1880

2. Andres Jonsson,, b febr.11.1880, emigrated after 1900

3. Knut Jonsson, b feb.18.1878, emigrated 1904

4. Tone Jonsdtr. B mar.16, 1890, emigrated 1913

5. Hallvard Jonsson , b. 1898, emigrated after 1900

Possible surnames: Brotteli, Bratteli, Johnson,

I guess you cannot find all of these, but if one of them could be located, I’d have a starting point for tracing the rest.

Next is a man from Lie under Byklum, bron out of wedlock to Knut Ånundsson Byklum and Anne Kjetilsdtr. Røysland.

Knut Knutsson Byklum, b Aug. 9., 1878, emigrated 1900, in the Emigrant protocol referred to as Knud K. Røysland. Possible surnames: Byklum, Roysland, Knudson

Next man out came from Byklumplasset, but his parents used the surname Mosdøl.

Osmund Halvorsen Byklum, b feb.6.1867, emigrated 1888, in the Emigrant protocol referred to as Osmund H. Tvedten. Possible surnames: Byklum, Lee, Mostel (?) Mosdale(?), Twedten etc.

Then another person from a cotters place under Byklum:

Olav Andresson Byklum, b jul. 8.1873,

Olav was married in Kr. sand apr. 26.1900 to Tora Drengsdtr. Mosdøl, b may 24.1872. They allegedly emigrated because her father, Dreng Halvorson Tveiten, would not allow them to marry. Olav was not good enough for him. In the emigrant protocol Olav is called “Olaf Andreason”. The protocol also says that they intended to go to her grand-uncle, Halvor Aanundsson Tveiten, who lived in Grafton, Twp., Walsh County, ND. (Halvor Ånundsson had also emigrated after falling out with his father!). Anyway, Halvor Ånundsson and his family is found in Grafton in the US census of 1910, but Olav and Tora did not live at his home at that point of time. I wonder where they went, and what happened to them. Posible surnames: Andreason, Anderson, Hagen, Byklum

Then comes a man whose parents lived at Dysje in Nordbygdi.

Knut Olsen Nesland, b sep.21.1830, emigrated 1854 after having lived for 8 years at Åse, Årdal, Rogaland. His wife was Siri Rasmusdtr., age unknown.

Then another Dysje family.

Olav Olsson Dysje, b jul.11. 1849, emigrated 1883 m. 1878 to Anne Olsdtr. Nesland, b. Oct.1.1853

child:

Anne, b apr.2.4.1878

Ole Olsson and Anne Olsdtr. are of course difficult names, but it might help that I have reason to believe that they lived in Marshall County, MN, (Grygla area!), this because Anne’s mother and stepfather, who Ole and Anne emigrated with, are found as deceased there in the MHS death index. They were Andres Hallvardsson Nesland, b dec.9.1830, d mar.17.1914 m 1874 to Birgit Tarjeisdtr. Bjones, b. Mar. 28.1828, d may 11. 1914 Gjerden.

Next comes a Homme family, that lived at Gjerden in Bykle, Knut Tellefsen Homme, b 1828, emigrated 1883 with all his children, his wife Margit had died 1882. Their children were the following:

Tellef Knutson, b sep.12. 1855, m 1880 to Ingeborg Evensdtr. Jore

Tarjei Knutsson, b aug.16,1857, m 1883 to Turid Auversdtr. Vatnedalen

Anne Knutsdtr. b. Apr.13.1859, m 1883 to Tarjei Knutsson Byklum

Daniel Knutson, b jun.4.1865

Gunhild Knutsdtr.,b may 1.1868, reportedly d. nov.6.1904 in Stratheona, Alberta, Canada.

Gjerden Attistog

Then comes another person who lived at Gjerden:

Pål Ånundsson Byklum, b dec.7.1858, emigrated 1883, is rumoured to have lived in Canada and had wife and children there, but this I don’t know for sure.

Next man out Knut Olsson Gjerden, b 28.5.1888, emigrated 1911.

Knut’s brother, Jon, b nov.5.1893 emigrated 1911.

Their older brother Dreng, Dreng, b. Dec. 7. 1883, had emigrated 1906, and in 1911 he lived at Crookston, Minnesota. I know all I need about Dreng, among other things that he died in Miles City, Montana on dec.21.1959, but as far as I’m able to find out, the younger brothers did not live in that area, and whatever happened to them, is unknown to me.

HISDAL

Next are 4 Nomeland-brothers, who for a time lived at Hisdal in Bykle. They were the sons of Tellef Salveson and Gro Kjetilsdtr.

Salve T. Nomeland, b 1877, emigrated 1893

Kjetil T. Nomeland, b 1879, emigration year unknown

Olav T. Nomeland, b 1881, emigration year unknown

Knut T. Nomeland, b 1888, emigration year unknown

Next comes a family from Stavenes, ho emigrated from Holen

Olav Olsson Stavenes, b feb.24.1850, emigr. 1893 m to Anlaug Tellefsdtr. Holen, b jan.18.1850

Children:

Ingebjørg, b 1884

Olav, b sept. 8.1888

Torleiv, b 1896

Halvor, b 1899

They reportedly lived in Minnesota, but I dont know where or for how long. A clue however, might be that I found one Anlaug Stavenes who died in Beltrami County on march 24. 1944. Also the following family loived at Holen in Bykle before emigration. They left in 1893:

Knut Gunnarson Nesland, b aug. 4.1840

M 1875 Ingjerd Hallvardsdtr. Nesland, b jun. 12.1834

son

Gunnar f 22.4.1876

Ingjerd reportedly died in Beltrami County on jun.6.1908 (MHS death index). Knut died in Polk County on oct.16. 1916. Where they died is one thing, bur where did they live?

Next is then their son Gunnar . According to MHS he died in Pennington County on jul.10.1957.But did he have a family? And where was his precise location ?

Another Holen man is next:

Hallvard Mikkelson , b may 6. 1880, m. 1919 to Gyro Hallvardsdtr. Homme, b 1893.

Hallvard emigrated in 1900, Gyro probably some years later, where they lived, and what children they had I don’t know.

HOSLEMO

Knut Knutsson Hoslemo, b 1794 and his Gyro Oddsdtr. Byklum, b 1793 moved from Hoslemo to Suldal appr. 1840. There they lived at a cotters place named Spekevika under the farm Guggedal. Their son Knut,b apr. 30, 1829, married Kirsti Larsdtr. Vikane. It seems they and their children all emigrated in 1891, exept the youngest son who left Norway in 1892.

Knut Knutsson b 1858, m 1887 to Guro Samsonsdtr. Sørestad, b 1865

Kirsti Knutsdtr., b 1860, m 1891 to Peder Nilson Helgenæs,b 1843

Guro Knutsdtr, b 1863, unmarried at emigration 1891

Ola, b 1868, unmarried at emigration 1891

Odd, b 1872, unmarried at emigration 1892

Most likely the just went by as Knudsons, but of course other surnames are possible. I don’t know if this is enough to place them, but maybe worth a try?

Next is a family where the wife came from Hoslemo:

Hadle Lidvorson Felland, b in Wisconsin 1887 m 1907 to Inga Kolbeinsdtr. Haslemo, b june 13.1877

Son, John, b in Norway 1912

They left for the US soon after 1912. The Fellands tended to keep their surname in the US. Inga’s younger sister, Gyro, b 1890 also emigrated, and was reportedly married, to whom is not said. Probably impossible to find ! The same is probably true also for another sister, Kjersti, b june 5.1893 , even if it’s known that she emigrated 1912.

A widow from Mosdøl emigrated with two sons 1861.

Jorunn Tarjesdtr., b 1808, widow of Mikkel O. Mosdøl, d ca 1850 and

Borger T. Hovet, d 1860.

Her sons were Olav Mikkelson, b mar 7. 1841

And Tarjei Mikkelson, b may 5. 1842.

Probable surname for the boys would be Mikkelson, or some variety of that, but that is a very common name. I found one Torger Mikkelson who died in Chippewa County, MN. on sep.4.1911, but if that is the same person as the one above, is anyones guess. Another possibility could be that they called themselves with surname Hovet after the cotters place in Valle they emigrated from.

A family that disappeared from Bykle some time between 1881 and 1891 may very well have emigrated. None of them is found in Norway in 1900, and it would seem unlikely that they should all be dead:

Knut Vetleson Mosdøl, b aug.5.1850, emigr. Before 1891 m 1875 to Birgit Gunnarsdtr. Nesland, b jun. 20. 1838

children:

Gunnar, b nov.21.1874

Åsne, b dec. 29.1876

Ingebjørg, b dec.4.1881

Tellef Vetleson, Knut’s younger brother also disappears from Bykle

They might have called themselves Mo or Moen, but more likely they used surnamme Vetleson, which is not very common. I found one Knute Vetleson who died in Pennington County on sept. 27. 1942, and he could be my man. The byklare in America tended to become very old.

NESLAND

Torkel Mikkelson Nesland, b aug.22. 1864 , emigrated 1892, m 1889 to Gyro Svenkesdtr. Nesland, b jul.23.1854

This family I suspect of having lived near Grygla, since I found one Gyro Nesland (no birtdate given) as deceased in Beltrami County on dec. 12.1932, and one Tom Nesland (no birtdate given) as deceased in same county on Sept 11. 1932. They may very well be our people.

Stavenes

Salmund (Solomon?) Eivindson (Evenson?) Stavenes b 1842, and his sister Margit, b jan.19.1850 were reportedly somewhere in the Dakota territory in 1883. They were not there in 1880, I’ve found out, but mabe you could acces censuses after that year ?

Olav Halvorsen Stavenes b feb 16.1841, emigrated 1902 with son Halvor, b may 15.1872.

Halvor was reportedly married to one Margit (Mary?) Jørgensdtr. Lie, and lived In Staughton, Wisconsin. Also here it would be a matter of accessing newer censuses.

Ingjerd Knutsdtr, b 1856, emigrated 1902 with daughter Gunhild. Ingjerd was the widow of Olav Auversen Stavenes, but her last place of residence before emigration was a farm in Mo by the name of Haugehåtveit. She may have called herself Knudsen, Stavenes, Underdal or Håtveit (Hotvedt?). A long shot !?!

Bjones

Knut Tarjeisson Bjones, b mar.7.1837, emigrated as a widower in 1877, his wife from 1867 Kristi Eivindsdotter Trydal having died on mar.12.3.1868

Probable surname Torgerson, Tarjeson, Targeson or sth of that ilk

Tarjei Tarjeisson Bjones (y.), b jun.13.1831, emigrated with family 30.4.1880 m 1858 to Ingebjørg Vetlesdtr. Lunden, b 1836:

children:

Margit, b aug. 5.1861

Tarjei, b aug. 29.1864

Vetle, b feb. 22.1867

Mikkel, b dec. 17.1869

Signe, b apr. 1.1876

Probable surname the same as for Tarjei’s brother Knut above,

A third brother also emigrated with his family. This was in 1882

Arne Tarjeisson Bjones, b jun.16.1841 m 1871 to Eli Olsdtr. Nesland, b jul. 5.1833

children:

Tarjei, b jul.24.1872

Margit, b nov.30.1874

Probable surname as Arne’s brothers above

Vatnedalen

The next family emigrated from Vatnedalen in 1885, and may have use that farmname as their surname

Svein Olsson Maurlii, b sep. 23.1830 m 1871 to widow Brita Kolbeinsdotter Vatnedalen, b 1834

children:

Margit, b apr. 24.1874

Borghild,b nov.24.1877

Most likely they were just called the Sven Olson family, but Maurlee is a possibility.
