Gene Estensen took this picture of Erik Bye at the Civil War battlefield of Chickamauga, Georgia. Mr. Bye sits on the monument to the 15th Wisconsin Regiment, "the Norwegian Regiment". They had earlier discussed Gene's two great-great-uncles from Tinn, Telemark that died with Company K, 15th Wisconsin. Near this spot, the commander of the 15th, Hans Christian Heg was killed. Some 40 descendants of the Heg family joined Mr. Bye at Chickamauga to view the re-enactment of the battle. Much of the history of the 15th comes from letters written home by Hans Heg to his wife Gunhild Jacobsdatter Einong. Gunhild was born in Tinn, Telemark and came to America (Muskego) early. |
