Please note that the Highland Prairie list is not necessarily a list of persons buried at the Highland Prairie Lutheran Church cemetery. It is a list of the early pioneers and some of them moved on. Also, the list is far from complete but is a good representation of what was remembered when the plague was made.
Arnold Ness remembers that those living east of the church were
from Nannestad, those living west of the church were from Telemark. There were
also a few Norwegians from other parts of Norway. The persons signing the incorporaration
papers were Elertson from Telemark (the first Norwegian farmer in Minnesota)
and Lars Ask who came to America in 1851 from Ringerike, and to Fillmore County
in early 1853. Arnold reminds us that the plaque only lists the heads of family.
Their unmarried children or single adults were not considered pioneers.
HIGHLAND PRAIRIE CHURCH MEMORIAL
In Highland Prairie, Fillmore County Minnesota stands the Highland Prairie Lutheran Church. In the church park there is a Pioneer Memorial Stone that was dedicated 24 June 1930. The original Highland Prairie Lutheran Church burned, but enough bricks were saved to built a memorial replica. In this building hangs a plaque with the names of pioneer settlers, listed by their year of arrival.
