Asgrim K. Skaro is listed as the Captain of Company D, 9th Minnesota Regiment.
It goes on to say that he enrolled in the 9th on August 31, 1862 and was killed
at Nashville on December 16, 1864.
Page 432, Battle of Nashville, Tennesee.
At four o'clock our artillery suddenly ceased firing. The signal was given with
a shout..the men sprang from the ground and charged across a cornfield...No
sooner had they started when the Confederates opened the most withering and
terrific fire of musketry and artillery.. There were cannon on the left, cannon
on the right, and cannon in front of them.. But there was no faltering. On they
charged, every man determined to do or die. The enemy's works were reached!
The colors of the Ninth were first planted thereon. The Ninth captured about
five hundred and fifty prisoners..In the charge of the works Captain Skaro,
a brave and gallant officer, was killed.. Captain Skaro, in his earlier days,
had served a term of enlistment in the regular army as a private and non-commissioned
officer, and at the breaking out of the war raised a company at St. Peter for
the 2nd Minnesota of which he was duly chosen captain. He resigned his commission
in 1862 and the same year raised Company D of the Ninth. He was a thorough soldier,
and greatly beloved by his men.
Note: At the capital of Minnesota, in St. Paul, hangs a picture painted by Howard Pyle of the gallant charge of the Minnesota regiments at Shy's hill discussed above.
